B&H CitEscape Photo Adventure - Fire Island

  • sunken forest fire island (map)

Come join us for the first citEscape photo walk of the summer on the shores of Fire Island in the Sunken Forest, a small hidden forest surrounded by pristine beaches at Sailors Haven. Clifford Pickett and Susan Magnano will be lead the photowalk through a 1.5 elevated boardwalk loop through this extremely unique ecosystem. The Sunken Forest is ranked as "globally rare," meaning there are few remaining occurrences of this assemblage of plants throughout the world. Fire Island is famous for their wild deer that roam through this neck of the woods but so do the mosquitos, so bring some bug spray.

It is roughly a 1 1/2 hour train ride on the LIRR to Sayville where you can catch a bus ($5) to the ferry terminal. You will want to catch the 11:15am ferry to Sailor's Haven ($16 - roughly 20 minute ride). We will meet in front of the Sailors Haven Visitors Center where we will depart at 12pm for the 1.5 mile loop. This is roughly a 2 hour event, you will have plenty of time to make it back for the 4pm ferry however the later ferry is also the last at 5:30pm.

For those who want to make the most of this adventure, stick around to enjoy the gorgeous beaches through sunset, then head to Cherry Grove (less than 1 mile) for refreshments and beverages before catching a ferry back to reality.

Please wear comfortable shoes, bring lots of water, bug spray, and sunscreen. The beaches are beautiful on the island right now, so if you want to stay after, bring a bathing suit and towel. Another hot tip: bring some cash with you to the island.
